The Yitzhak Navon Community and Youth Unit
קהילה

The Yitzhak Navon Community and Youth Unit was established by Prof. Michael Klinghoffer and Ms. Anna Shapira with the aim of enabling students of the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance to combine their professional artistic practice with meaningful social and community engagement.

The Unit works in collaboration with social organizations in Jerusalem and beyond, making it possible for dozens of projects to take place each year.

These projects combine activity in the fields of music and dance and are intended for instrumentalists, conductors, composers, arrangers, singers, and dancers. Through this work, the Academy shares the remarkable talent and human capital within its community, bringing the arts of music and dance to places where they are needed and less accessible.

The Unit’s activities reach diverse populations through individual and group instruction, the creation of meaningful personal connections, and hands-on experience in areas such as production, conducting, ensemble coaching, composition, and more.

Head of the Unit: Shoham Peled

Our Projects

Projects with Children and Youth

Music education projects in schools, conservatories, youth orchestras, choirs, and community frameworks across Jerusalem and throughout Israel. Academy students mentor children and teenagers from diverse backgrounds through individual and group instruction, instrumental coaching, theory support, ensemble leadership, composition, and emotional mentoring.

Projects with People with Disabilities

Ensemble-based music and dance projects in collaboration with rehabilitation centers and organizations supporting people with disabilities and mental health challenges. Academy students work alongside participants in integrative orchestras, instrumental ensembles, dance groups, and creative rehabilitation programs, combining professional guidance, personal support, improvisation, composition, movement, and performance.

Projects with Senior Citizens

Music and dance projects for older adults, creating intergenerational encounters through singing, composition, movement, and personal connection. Academy students work with senior citizens in community centers, private homes, and day-care settings, including programs for people living with dementia and Alzheimer’s, encouraging expression, joy, and human connection through the arts.

Community Projects

Community-based music and dance projects that bring the Academy’s artistic activity to diverse audiences in Jerusalem and throughout Israel. These initiatives include concerts, performances, artistic workshops, dance-related production projects, and interdisciplinary programs combining music, movement, and personal storytelling, including projects with bereaved families and community groups.
