The Dance Teaching Certificate program is designed for advanced students and holders of degrees in dance and related fields, training dance professionals to teach across a diverse range of educational settings for all age groups. The curriculum is built upon a unique integration of research, creation, performance, and pedagogy, emphasizing somatic learning and direct experience—from the learning body to the teaching body. The program combines pedagogical training, educational studies, and hands-on clinical teaching experience in schools and dance departments, while offering a personally tailored track for each student under the guidance of a leading faculty in the field. Graduates of the program successfully integrate into the education system and are in high demand within the educational dance landscape, alongside paths for advanced studies.

"Kaleidoscope" Course

Kaleidoscope (from Greek, meaning "to observe beautiful forms"): an optical instrument through which shapes are reflected in symmetrical and ever-changing colorful patterns. In a similar spirit, the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance initiates and hosts artistic-social encounters between dance and music students and schoolchildren of various age groups (with an emphasis on grades 4–9) studying dance within formal educational frameworks. These encounters reflect the concept of the "Artist-Teacher" and combine practical teaching experience, choreography, and performance, alongside a unique shared experience in dance and live music. The course is based on the Kaleidoscope Dance Education Program at New York University (NYU).

Why study at the Academy?

The Dance Teaching Certificate program is designed for:

  • Undergraduate students (Years 3-4) and graduate students (Years 1-2) currently studying at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance.

  • Holders of Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in dance.

  • Holders of Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in other fields who wish to pursue a Teaching Certificate without an additional degree, subject to a complementary studies program.

The program is guided by principles centered around the framework of Pedagogy – Research – Creation – Performance, creating meaningful connections and contexts between them.

At the core of this teacher training is clinical preparation, which integrates formal and informal educational settings, along with intra-faculty peer teaching.

The field of dance is traditionally learned through an apprenticeship model, passed down from body to body, and includes learning through the bodies of peers as well as the teacher's body. Hence, the philosophy is that a body that learns, observes, and experiences is also a body that teaches. Based on these principles, the teacher training program was developed to align with the various specializations in dance and movement while preserving their unique characteristics.

The program qualifies students for a Comprehensive (K-12) Teaching Certificate and consists of three modules:

  1. Educational Studies and Art Pedagogy: including courses in psychology, philosophy, sociology, music, and dance education in special education.

  2. Pedagogical and Practical Studies: including methodologies for teaching dance in elementary, middle, and high schools across a variety of content areas.

  3. Clinical Training: including comprehensive (all age groups) practical teaching experience in elementary schools as well as middle and high school dance departments.

Why study Dance Education at the Academy?

  • A faculty composed of leaders in their respective fields.

  • Learning within a creative and artistic environment.

  • A personally tailored curriculum for each student.

  • Graduates of the program enjoy high employment rates in their field and are in great demand across various sectors of the education system. Many of our alumni currently hold key positions and prominent teaching roles within the dance education landscape in Israel.

Students enrolled in the Teaching Certificate program have the option to study concurrently or continue upon graduation toward a Master’s degree.

The duration of study is 1–2 days per week for two years, which includes practical teaching experience.

Tuition for the program: Equivalent to one year of undergraduate tuition.

The workshop consists of 13 intensive, year-long sessions (held on Fridays approximately once every two weeks) and about 3 Zoom sessions between September and June. It runs concurrently with actual teaching practice within the education system. The workshop is also open for registration to dance education students and graduates from other colleges.
