Why study at the Academy?
The Dance Teaching Certificate program is designed for:
Undergraduate students (Years 3-4) and graduate students (Years 1-2) currently studying at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance.
Holders of Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in dance.
Holders of Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in other fields who wish to pursue a Teaching Certificate without an additional degree, subject to a complementary studies program.
The program is guided by principles centered around the framework of Pedagogy – Research – Creation – Performance, creating meaningful connections and contexts between them.
At the core of this teacher training is clinical preparation, which integrates formal and informal educational settings, along with intra-faculty peer teaching.
The field of dance is traditionally learned through an apprenticeship model, passed down from body to body, and includes learning through the bodies of peers as well as the teacher's body. Hence, the philosophy is that a body that learns, observes, and experiences is also a body that teaches. Based on these principles, the teacher training program was developed to align with the various specializations in dance and movement while preserving their unique characteristics.
The program qualifies students for a Comprehensive (K-12) Teaching Certificate and consists of three modules:
Educational Studies and Art Pedagogy: including courses in psychology, philosophy, sociology, music, and dance education in special education.
Pedagogical and Practical Studies: including methodologies for teaching dance in elementary, middle, and high schools across a variety of content areas.
Clinical Training: including comprehensive (all age groups) practical teaching experience in elementary schools as well as middle and high school dance departments.
