End-of-Year Examination Requirements for the Wind Department

Year 1:
2 works from different periods, and 3 orchestral excerpts.

Year 2:
3 works from different periods, and 5 orchestral excerpts.

Year 3:
3 works from different periods, and 6 orchestral excerpts.

Year 4:
4 works from different periods, and 6 orchestral excerpts.

B.Mus Recital:
4 works from different periods; a recital of 50 to 60 minutes.
The recital may include a chamber work, provided that the candidate’s instrument has a central role in it.

M.Mus Recital (for both years of study):
The recital must include 5 works from all major periods, drawn from the standard repertoire of the instrument.
The student, together with the teacher, will select the works, and the program will be approved by the Head of the Department.
Recital length: 50 to 60 minutes.

Examination Requirements for Recorder:

End-of-Year Examination — Year 1:

  1. A work from the late Italian Baroque or the late German Baroque
  2. A solo work, without accompaniment, from any period, chosen by the student
  3. An additional work of the student’s choice.
  4. At least one work must be performed from a facsimile
  5. At least one of the works must be performed in full

End-of-Year Examination — Year 2:

A complete work from the early Italian Baroque
A complete work from the late Baroque
A modern work
An additional work of the student’s choice
At least one work must be performed from a facsimile
 

End-of-Year Examination — Year 3:

A complete work from the late Baroque 
A complete work from the early Baroque
A work from the Renaissance or the Middle Ages 
A modern work 
At least 2 works must be performed from facsimiles
 

Degree Completion Examination / Final Recital:

A recital of approximately one hour, including music in 5 different styles, whether period-based or national.
A concerto must be performed
A chamber work for at least 3 participants must be performed
At least 2 works must be performed from facsimiles
The student must demonstrate the ability to use original stylistic ornamentation
 

End-of-Year Recital — Year 1, Master’s Degree

A program of 60–90 minutes, including works from different periods, approximately 5 different national or period-based styles, centered around a conceptual theme that will be presented at the beginning of the evening and in the program notes. At least one of the works must be a chamber work, for 3 or more participants.
 

End-of-Year Recital — Year 2, Master’s Degree

A one-hour program presented as a lecture-recital, centered around a musical or extra-musical theme, and including at least two chamber works for different ensembles, each with 3 or more participants.
