Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass

Requirements for End-of-First-Semester Assessments, Years 2 and 3

  • An étude, caprice, or virtuoso piece
  • A work, or part of a work, by Bach or by another composer from the Baroque period
  • A work of the student’s choice

Students in Years 1 and 4 who wish to participate in semester assessments must notify the Coordinator of the Faculty of Performing Arts and Composition at least three weeks before the assessment date.

Requirements for End-of-Year Examinations, Years 1–3

  • Two movements from a suite, sonata, or partita by Bach
  • A movement from a concerto
  • An additional work of the examinee’s choice

Requirements for the Final Examination or Recital, Year 4

  • Bach: a prelude and two dances
  • The first movement, or the second and third movements, from a concerto from the instrument’s main repertoire
  • An Israeli or modern work
  • A work of the student’s choice

One of the works must be multi-movement and prepared in its entirety.

Examination duration: 30 minutes; recital duration: 60 minutes.

A student who received a grade of 90 or above in the end-of-third-year examination may present a recital instead of an examination.

Classical Guitar

Requirements for End-of-First-Semester Assessments, Years 2 and 3

Students must prepare at least two pieces in different styles.

Students in Years 1–4 who wish to participate in semester assessments must notify the Coordinator of the Faculty of Performing Arts and Composition at least three weeks before the assessment date.

Requirements for End-of-Year Examinations, Years 1–3

  • A work from the Renaissance or Baroque period
  • A work from the Classical or Romantic period
  • A work from the Impressionist or Modern period

Students may prepare a performance program containing more than three pieces in different styles; however, the examination committee reserves the right to stop the performance at any time.

Requirements for the Final Examination or Recital, Year 4

  • At least one work from the Renaissance or Baroque period
  • At least one work from the Classical or Romantic period
  • At least one work from the Modern period — the 20th or 21st century
  • At least one movement from a concerto

A multi-movement work or a work by an Israeli composer is welcome, but not required.

Examination duration: 30 minutes; recital duration: 60 minutes.

Mandolin

Requirements for End-of-First-Semester Assessments, Years 2 and 3

  • An étude or caprice of the student’s choice from one of the three collections: Gaviniès, Paganini, or Kreutzer
  • A movement from the partitas and sonatas for solo violin by J. S. Bach
  • A movement from a concerto for mandolin or violin from the Classical or Romantic period

Students in Years 1–4 who wish to participate in semester assessments must notify the Coordinator of the Faculty of Performing Arts and Composition at least three weeks before the assessment date.

Requirements for End-of-Year Examinations, Years 1–3

  • Two movements from Bach’s partitas and sonatas for solo violin
  • A movement from a Classical sonata for violin and piano
  • Two movements from a concerto for mandolin or violin from the Classical or Romantic period
  • An original contemporary work for mandolin

Requirements for the Final Examination or Recital, Year 4

  • A complete partita or sonata for solo violin by Bach
  • A Classical sonata for violin and piano by Mozart or Beethoven
  • A concerto for mandolin or violin — three movements
  • A sonata for solo violin by Ysaÿe, or a prelude for solo mandolin by Calace
  • An original contemporary Israeli work for mandolin

Examination duration: 30 minutes; recital duration: 60 minutes.

Three works in three different styles are required for each examination. One work may be an arrangement of a song, an arrangement of a musical piece prepared by the examinee, or a piece composed by the examinee.

Requirements for End-of-Year Examinations, Years 1–3

Three works in three different styles are required for each examination. One work may be an arrangement of a song, an arrangement of a musical piece prepared by the examinee, or a piece composed by the examinee.

Requirements for the Final Examination or Recital, Year 4

The recital must include at least five stylistically varied works, or alternatively, a program with a total duration of 60 minutes. One work may be an arrangement of a song, an arrangement of a musical piece prepared by the examinee, or a piece composed by the examinee. A request may be submitted to include an additional arrangement by the examinee in the program.

At least one of the works must be selected from the list below. Alternatively, a program may be constructed without works from the list. It is recommended that the performed repertoire have an overarching idea that unifies it into a coherent program, in which the works relate to one another and create a clear structure for the recital as a whole.

Examination duration: 30 minutes; recital duration: 60 minutes.
