Piano Exams for Composition Students A + B – Exam Requirements

(The requirements are phrased in the masculine gender for convenience only)

Classical

3-4 pieces, with a total performance time not exceeding 20 minutes.

The pieces must be from at least two different periods – it is mandatory that one of the pieces be a modern work (written after 1900). A bonus will be added to the final grade for students who choose an Israeli piece for this requirement.

At least two pieces must be performed from memory (by heart).

At least one piece must present a technical challenge appropriate to the student's level (as assessed by the teacher).

Jazz and Non-Classical Music

3-4 pieces, with a total performance time not exceeding 20 minutes.

The pieces must be from at least two different periods and/or genres.

At least one piece must include improvisation over the harmonic structure of the piece.

At least one piece must be at a slow tempo.

At least one piece must be at a medium-fast tempo, demonstrating a steady rhythmic accompaniment (Groove) in the left and/or right hand. The groove does not have to continue throughout the entire piece, but the student must demonstrate mastery of it and coordination between both hands. A Walking bass will also be considered a groove for this purpose.

Note: In certain cases, a bonus will be awarded for performance beyond the minimum requirements—for example, performing more than two classical pieces from memory.

General Guidelines for the Study Repertoire Throughout the Year

Every piece studied during the year must be documented on the attached form and submitted to the examiners during the end-of-year exam.

In Classical Piano: Students must study at least 7 pieces (individual movements of a work will count as separate pieces for this purpose, provided there is appropriate diversity and each movement is longer than one page).

In Classical Piano: Students must study at least one polyphonic piece.

In Non-Classical Piano: Students must study at least 8 pieces.
