Repertoire Requirements for Undergraduate Exams and Recitals in the David Gritz Department for String Instruments

Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass

Requirements for Mid-Term Assessments, 2nd and 3rd Years

  1. Etude, caprice or a virtuosic piece
  2. A piece or part of a piece by Bach or another baroque composer
  3. A piece of the student’s choice
  • 1st and 4th years students who wish to play in the mid-term assessments must notify the Coordinator of the Faculty of Performing Arts & Composition at least 3 weeks in advance

Requirements for the End-of-Year Exam, 1st-3rd Years

  1. Two movements from a suite, sonata or partita by Bach
  2. A movement from a concerto
  3. A piece of the student’s choice

Requirements for the Final Exam or Recital, 4th Year

  1. Bach: prelude and two dances
  2. 1st movement, or 2nd and 3rd movements of a standard concerto
  3. An Israeli or a modern piece 
  4. A piece of the student’s choice
  • One of the pieces must be a multiple-movement piece, performed in its entirety 
  • Exam duration- 30 minutes, Recital duration- 60 minutes
  • Students who obtained a grade of 90 or above in their end-of-3rd year exam, may perform a recital instead of a final exam

Classical Guitar

Requirements for Mid-Term Assessments, 2nd and 3rd Years

The students must prepare at least two pieces in different styles 
  • 1st and 4th years students who wish to play in the mid-term assessments must notify the Coordinator of the Faculty of Performing Arts & Composition at least 3 weeks in advance

Requirements for the End-of-Year Exam, 1st-3rd Years

  1. A piece from the renaissance or the baroque era
  2. A piece from the classical or the romantic era
  3. A piece from the impressionist or the modern era 
  • Students may prepare a program that contains more than three pieces of different styles, but the exam committee reserves the right to ask them to stop playing at any time.

Requirements for the Final Exam or Recital, 4th Year

  1. At least one piece from the renaissance or the baroque era
  2. At least one piece from the classical or the romantic era
  3. At least one modern piece from the 20th or the 21st century
  4. At least one movement of a concerto 
  • Students may perform multiple-movement piece, or a piece by an Israeli composer, but they are not required to 
  • Exam duration- 30 minutes, Recital duration- 60 minutes
  • Students who obtained a grade of 90 or above in their end-of-3rd year exam, may perform a recital instead of a final exam

Mandolin

Requirements for Mid-Term Assessments, 2nd and 3rd Years

  1. An etude or caprice by Gaviniès, Paganini or Kreutzer
  2. One movement from the sonatas or partitas for solo violin by Bach 
  3. One movement from a classical or a romantic concerto for mandolin or violin 
  • 1st and 4th years students who wish to play in the mid-term assessments must notify the Coordinator of the Faculty of Performing Arts & Composition at least 3 weeks in advance

Requirements for the End-of-Year Exam, 1st-3rd Years

  1. Two movements from a sonata or partita for solo violin by Bach
  2. One movement from a classical sonata for violin and piano 
  3. Two movements from a classical or a romantic concerto for mandolin or violin 
  4. An original contemporary piece for mandolin 

Requirements for the Final Exam or Recital, 4th Year

  1. A complete sonata or partita for solo violin by Bach
  2. A classical sonata for violin and piano by Mozart or Beethoven
  3. A concerto for mandolin or violin- three movements 
  4. A sonata for solo violin by Ysaÿe, or a prelude for mandolin solo by Calace
  5. A contemporary Israeli piece originally composed for mandolin 
  • Exam duration- 30 minutes, Recital duration- 60 minutes
  • Students who obtained a grade of 90 or above in their end-of-3rd year exam, may perform a recital instead of a final exam

Harp

Requirements for Mid-Term Assessments, 2nd and 3rd Years

Three pieces from three different styles in each exam. One piece can be an arrangement of a song or an arrangement of a piece of music done by the examinee, or a piece composed by the examinee.

Requirements for the End-of-Year Exam, 1st-3rd Years

Three pieces from three different styles in each exam. One piece can be an arrangement of a song or an arrangement of a piece of music done by the examinee, or a piece composed by the examinee.

Requirements for the Final Exam or Recital, 4th Year

The recital will include at least five stylistically diverse works, or – alternatively, create a sixty minute program. One piece can be an arrangement of a song or an arrangement of a classical piece done by the examinee, or a piece composed by the examinee. A request may be submitted to include additional arrangement by the examinee in the program.
At least one of the works should be from the following list of works*. Alternatively, it is possible to put together a program that does not include works from the list. It is recommended that the repertoire being played has an idea that unites it into a coherent program, in which the works relate to each other and create a clear structure for the complete recital.
  • Exam duration- 30 minutes, Recital duration- 60 minutes
  • Students who obtained a grade of 90 or above in their end-of-3rd year exam, may perform a recital instead of a final exam
