Maurice van Lieshout (NL, 1968) studied recorder and piano at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and the Scuola Civica in Milano. From 1994 – 2011, he taught historical improvisation at the University of Music and Theater in Leipzig. In the period 2001-2012, he was teaching ‘music before 1600’ at University for Music and Theater in Frankfurt. In his native country, he directed the instrumental part of the Master program ‘Early modal music and vocal ensemble’ at Fontys Conservatory Tilburg from 2004, until he was appointed professor for Early Music at University of Music in Saarbrücken, in 2007. From the winter semester 2011/12, he is active as professor for recorder at the Munich University of Music and Theatre.
In 1993, van Lieshout founded the ensemble for late medieval music ‘Fala Música’. The ‘Schola Stralsundensis’ operates under his artistic guidance, dedicating itself to the music of the 16th century. Guest-conducting engagements with, among others, Wiener Akademie and Capella Leopoldina Graz testify his merits in baroque music. Van Lieshout also has a keen interest in contemporary music, and was involved in numerous world premiere performances of music composed by, among others, Bára Grimsdóttir (Iceland), Paul Frankhuyzen (NL), Caterina Calderoni (Italy) and Joszef Tal (Israel).
